Baby's First X-Rays

We made our first--and I'm sure not the last--visit to Med Stop today. After picking Lauren up from dance class this afternoon, Jonathan slammed his finger in the car door. He had his pointer finger wrapped around the side of the door as he tried to shut it. I could immediately tell this was going to be a bad one, in the silence before the screaming started. Over the next two-and-a-half hours, he screamed on and off as I tried everything I could think of to help him feel better. Of course, this all happened when Daddy was playing golf without his phone--so I was on my own to decide just how bad it was. Half an hour before Med Stop closed, I decided to take him in (rather than keep waiting and risk a middle-of-the-night ER visit).

Lauren took this picture of us as we waited to see the doctor. I had given Jonathan ibuprofen, which thankfully seemed to kick in while we were in the waiting room.

And here's Lauren, still in half of her ballet attire from dance class.

After a lot of waiting, we were helped by several very nice and kind people (all of whom commented on how large Jonathan is for his age). The doctor took a quick look at his finger and immediately said it needed an x-ray--which actually made me feel better, as though I had done the right thing in bringing him in. Thankfully, Jonathan did great during the x-rays and was actually quite calm, even with all of these strangers poking at him. (The Elmo video on my iPhone helped a lot!) He loved the stickers they gave him after the x-rays were over:

We finally got the verdict from the doctor: no fracture! Yay! He said there was a sign that the bone may have bent a little, which is apparently common in young growing bones. If Jonathan was older, he would have put a splint on his finger, but he said a 2-year-old would just make it his life's mission to get the splint off, and probably cause himself even more pain. So we are to continue giving him the ibuprofen and try to keep him from using his finger too much over the next few days. (How is that suppose to work?) But we are home and feeling grateful that the first Med Stop visit wasn't worse.
